Introduction to Herding

"Preparing  Yourself and your dog for Stockwork & Herding Concepts"  We will discuss some of the programs available for getting started,  where to look for a trainer and what to look for.  How to get started  with Instinct testing and some foundation skills that will go a long way  to making your start more successful. Basic herding obedience taught  away from stock will save you bundles when you are ready for lessons and  should be fun.  We will cover a few of the things you should consider  before coming to stock or spending money on lessons or clinics.  As well we will discuss many of the Herding Concepts such as;  Flight  Zones, Body Language and Cues in Herding,  Flanks, Rating stock, Draws,  the important role of Pressure in communication, and more terms and  phrases that you will hear when you meet other herding people.  This  seminar will help you be more prepared in understanding terms that help  you make sense of what exactly Herding Instinct is, how your dog  responds to livestock and how livestock responds to dogs.  Your role in  the “Instinct” game is critical and this seminar will help you better  understand your dog’s motivation, instinct and behaviour while on  livestock.
