Join COASC and Kim Cooper for an introductory seminar on Canine Scent Detection

COASC is the Central Ontario Australian Shepherd Club, an affiliate of the Australian Shepherd Club of America.

Intro to Canine Scent Detection

We're all familiar with working dogs, trained to detect drugs or explosives or contraband. Did you know that you can also train your companion, using identical techniques, to detect and indicate target odours? Scent detection can be a recreational activity for any dog with a nose. You can even compete and earn titles with your dog.

This workshop is designed for people and dogs who are new to the sport. In this workshop, we'll imprint your dog on a target odour (wintergreen) and have him search for that odour in various contexts. You'll receive an introduction to the rules of the sport of scent detection - rules, trials - and how to take part in this exciting activity.

Your dog will be thrilled to be doing what he does best: sniffing!

Course Requirements:

  • Pens and notepad (handouts will not be provided)

  • Dog crate

  • Chair

  • Variety of dog treats

  • Favourite toy

  • 6’ leash and non-tightening collar/harness

Please wear comfortable clothes and running type shoes.
